Inoculants by Crop - JumpStart - Chickpea

Chickpeas have similar fertility requirements as pea and lentil crops; it is a well known fact that pulse crops require phosphorus to support healthy growth, hasten maturity and support nitrogen fixation.

Nitrogen: Chickpeas inoculated with a nitrogen inoculant should not require nitrogen fertilizer, as they can fix 60-80% of their nitrogen needs.  The other 20-40% will usually be made available through nitrogen present in the soil and by mineralization throughout the growing season but special care is still required to ensure adequate phosphate fertility.

Phosphate: Chickpeas are very sensitive to seed-placed fertilizer.  Under good moisture conditions only 15-20 lb/ac of actual phosphate can be safely seed-placed, assuming good to excellent soil moisture, a one inch spread to the fertilizer and a 9 inch row spacing.  Inoculating with JumpStart can be a very easy and effective way to supply additional phosphate.  Using JumpStart gives your crop early access to phosphate for quick emergence, early plant vigour, larger root system and greater yields.
